THE  FELDENKRAIS  METHOD®

What Is It?

The Feldenkrais Method® is a unique approach for improving the use of one’s self. It is an ingenious form of sensory motor learning. By exploring the interaction between movement, sensation, thought, and feeling, we can discover easier, more efficient ways to do whatever act(ion) we choose. Part movement, part meditation and part puzzle, the primary focus is not on what you do, but on how you do it.

This method takes into account that we are governed by the physical laws of gravity, force and motion. More importantly, Feldenkrais understood that the brain and nervous system are what directs all behavior, including movement. Development and learning (the work of the brain) occur through interacting with our physical and social environments. Real learning comes from understandings and change from within. This is not simply a process of imitating others.

This approach was developed by Moshe Feldenkrais, D.SC. (1904-1984). His own debilitating knee injury led him on a path of research, discovery and recovery. Through his background as a nuclear physicist, engineer, judo master, and teacher, he was able to develop this unique and powerful tool for improving the function of the body and the state of the mind.

There are two different and complementary formats:  Functional Integration®(FI) and  Awareness Through Movement®(ATM)
